Spring Semester 2021 Housing Options

On-Campus Housing Is Open for Spring 2021

We look forward to being able to welcome more students back on campus this spring. The university has taken the lessons of fall 2020 to learn from the growing volume of information about Covid19 safety protocols. As such, we have improved our COVID testing and response plans, and these updated plans have proven effective with the over 800 students currently living on campus.

Campus Living and Student Health Services have developed and implemented a rigorous testing program to help ensure the safety of our on-campus residents, as well as the community. Surveillance screening and student self-reporting have resulted in on-campus residents slowing the spread of COVID-19 to less than 2% positivity rate of reported cases.

  • As outlined in the Chancellor’s letter of Oct. 7, ECU is making plans to expand housing for spring:
  • We plan to provide the option of on-campus living in the spring at reduced capacity.
  • All rooms will be single occupancy.
  • The Freshman Residency Requirement has been waived – for spring 2021 only.
  • Students will only pay the normal 2020-21 double room rate for the building they are assigned.
  • Students will be required to have a PCR COVID19 test within seven days before move in.
  • We have established a very large capacity for on-campus isolation and quarantine to assist students who may become ill.
  • We are updating our COVID-19 surveilance testing plans.

With single occupancy and expanded capacity for isolation and quarantine, we are preparing to keep on-campus housing open throughout the spring semester.

Community safety standards, the 3 W’s, will be intensely communicated for all campus and off-campus settings. Improved compliance, especially in social gatherings, is an institutional goal. Face coverings continue to be required and social distancing will be in place when practical.

Dining and Transportation

West End Dining will not reopen for spring. However, the Reade Street Market at West End Dining Hall and the retail dining options in the Student Center will be open. On The Hill, Todd Dining Hall will be open as will The Galley offerings and the POD Market.

We will offer a special meal plan option only for those students assigned to the Central and West End Neighborhoods that offers more retail dining options. This is in addition to the traditional Purple Meal Plans offered this fall which remain an option for students assigned to West End.

Transportation options for visiting Todd Dining Hall on College Hill will be available from West End leaving every 15 minutes.

Additional Notes

Students who moved home or off campus for the fall who wish to return to living on campus for the spring would have to sign a new spring contract when it comes online later in October.

Students when they contract will have the ability to preference their neighborhood choice.

The specific halls we will be able to reopen will depend on student demand. The halls will reopen for spring at 1 pm on Thursday, January 14, with an early drop off option for students the week before, similar to how we opened for fall 2020.
