Join Our Move-In Volunteer Crew
ECU and Campus Living are preparing for more than 5,800 first-year students, transfer students, and returning students to move in to our residence halls this August.
We are seeking faculty, staff, teams, groups, and organizations interested in volunteering to help our students during fall move-in, which takes place on Wednesday, August 14 through Friday, August 16. During these shifts, volunteers will assist our residents as they arrive at their new campus homes by helping to unload vehicles, carrying boxes, and holding open doors and elevators. We welcome groups of volunteers from ECU, as well as the local community.
We can accommodate any size group, and we will provide t-shirts to all participants. Individual volunteers are also welcome to lend a hand. These folks will primarily assist with our check-in process at Minges Coliseum.
Groups or individuals interested in participating, or who would like more information, should contact Dave Hilbert in Campus Living at hilbertd17@ecu.edu or 252-737-1063.

On Move-In Days
- Volunteers should arrive at their assigned residence hall 15 minutes prior their assigned time. Please let us know of major changes in the number of volunteers you indicated you would be able to provide.
- Each group’s designated leader should check in with the Resident Hall Coordinator upon arrival.
- Volunteer parking is available in three areas: (1) the lot at the bottom of College Hill, (2) the B2 lots on Reede Circle, and (3) Elmhurst School fields.
- Volunteers should feel free to discuss their organization when asked, but please be respectful. Our primary responsibility is to assist students with moving their possessions into the residence halls, while also providing each group with an outreach opportunity.
- Volunteers should stay with the family they are helping and encourage them to return to their cars to move to the remote parking lots (directions are on the back of their move-in permit) once their belongings have been placed in the room.
- Volunteers should not move items they are not comfortable moving. If an item appears to heavy, fragile, or expensive, ask the resident for help.
If a resident attempts to bring an excluded item, such as a refrigerator or microwave, please notify a residence hall staff member.
Additional Notes
- Volunteer groups should designate a contact person who will exchange cell phone numbers with Dave Hilbert in Campus Living (contact info above) at least a few days prior to move-in.
- Groups are welcome to bring business cards or small flyers to promote their organization.
- Free water will be available for volunteers.
- A limited supply of handcarts will be available.
- We encourage volunteers to post photos of their participation on their social media outlets. Be sure to use the hashtag, “ECUMoveIn.”
